In a powerful move toward gender equity and inclusive governance, Her Initiative, together with other young women leaders under the Young Women Leaders Agenda, was invited to the Parliament of Tanzania to advocate for the formal recognition of young women’s leadership at the national level.

Why Recognition Matters

For decades, young women have played crucial roles in shaping communities and influencing change at the grassroots level. However, their contributions are often overlooked in formal structures of governance. This visit aimed to bridge that gap by ensuring that young women’s leadership is not only visible, but formally recognized in Parliament so their voices can inform and influence decisions that affect their futures.

The visit to Parliament was more than symbolic. It was a strategic step forward in policy engagement. Attendees had the rare opportunity to sit in on a live parliamentary session, observe the national dialogue in action, and gain deeper insight into the legislative process.

Meeting with the Deputy Minister

A significant highlight of the visit was a dedicated meeting with the Hon Mwanaidi Ally Khamis, Deputy Minister of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups. In a brief but impactful conversation, representatives from Her Initiative and partner organizations introduced themselves and shared the vision behind the Young Women Leaders Agenda.

The Deputy Minister expressed appreciation for the work being done and the passion shown by the young women leaders. Most importantly, she voiced her support for the agenda, signaling an openness to continued collaboration and future engagement between the ministry and youth-led organizations.

Strengthening Alliances Across the Movement

The activity also served as a networking and unifying platform. For the first time, committee members met with other youth-led organizations that, while not yet formally part of the agenda, are equally invested in young women’s empowerment. The conversations sparked during and after the visit laid the groundwork for stronger alliances, broader representation, and a more cohesive push for formal recognition.
