Crafting a Vision that Speaks: A Powerful Session with Bill Bruty
As part of our continued journey to strengthen our fundraising capacity, we recently had the privilege of learning from one of the most seasoned voices in the field - Bill Bruty, Director of Fundraising Training Ltd.
With over 30 years of experience in fundraising across the UK and East Africa, Bill has helped both large and small organizations unlock the secrets to successful donor engagement. This session was a moment of clarity, reflection, and purpose.
The Power of a Vision: Short, Precise, and Impactful
Bill’s focus was simple, yet profound: how to craft a compelling vision statement that captures the heart of what we do while resonating with those we hope will support our mission.
“Funders are busy people. If you want to catch their attention, your vision must be clear, concise, and powerful enough to stop them in their tracks,” he told us.
He reminded us that a long, wordy paragraph often gets lost, but a short, sharp, emotionally charged sentence can move mountains. This advice hit home for many of us who’ve struggled to articulate the essence of our work in just a few words.
He guided us through practical exercises, challenging us to dig deep, to strip away jargon, and to write from the heart. The result? Some of the most inspiring vision statements we have ever heard in our organization.

As we continue this capacity-building journey, we carry Bill’s wisdom with us: Say what matters, say it well, and say it with purpose. In a world full of noise, your vision is your voice. Make it heard.
That was not the end. We also had another session in May..
Stepping Into Our Best Work: A Reflection on Our Leadership & Productivity Session with Jonathan Ndali
In May, our team took a much-needed pause not to slow down, but to reflect, reconnect, and grow. We had the opportunity to participate in a powerful capacity-building session led by Jonathan Ndali, an experienced leadership and management expert who brought clarity and challenge in equal measure.
Jonathan is the Founder and Managing Director of PJ Leaders, a Tanzania-based consultancy offering practical leadership solutions to complex organizational problems. With a track record that spans coaching and training across countries like Malaysia, Ghana, South Africa, the UK, Kenya, and Tanzania, he empowers people to step out of their comfort zones, rethink how they work, and build more motivated and productive teams. He’s also the author of The Diplomat in You, a book that teaches people how to work with others tactfully and skillfully, wisdom that deeply informed our session.
Our conversation went beyond theory. We opened up about the things that hold us back from performing at our best, distractions, time-wasting habits, unclear communication and took a deeper look at how we can work smarter, not harder. We identified our strengths, discussed the patterns that keep us stuck, and explored how to manage our time more intentionally.

What made the session especially impactful was its honesty. Jonathan did not just tell us what to do, he invited us to see ourselves differently, as individuals and as a team. He challenged us to rethink what effective leadership looks like in our own spaces, and how small shifts in mindset can create big results.
We also expressed our perspectives on what we do as a team that might be holding the rest of the team back and what measures of accountability can we take for ourselves and as a team to make sure that such things do not happen and the work we do is a success.

More than anything, this session reminded us that growth begins with awareness. That reflection is not a luxury, it is a necessity. And that stepping into our best work starts with the willingness to do things differently.
The team was grateful for the space this session created and for Jonathan’s role in helping us see the leader within each of us.
