In today’s digital world, it is impossible to ignore how powerful technology has become! It connects us, informs us, and gives us a platform to be heard. But at the same time, it is painful to see how that same space can be used to silence and harm, especially when it comes to women.
Recently, we had the opportunity to take part in the National Dialogue on Technology-Facilitated Violence and Violence Against Women in Elections, organized by WiLDAF Tanzania. It was a powerful discussion that opened our eyes to how serious the issue of online and offline violence against women really is, particularly during elections.

The conversation centered around one key question: Are digital spaces truly safe for women’s participation during elections? Many women who try to voice their opinions online especially in political discussions may face harassment, threats, and character attacks. This kind of violence doesn’t just hurt individuals; it discourages others from speaking up too. What stood out most was the reminder that digital platforms should be spaces of empowerment, not fear. Every woman deserves the right to participate fully in public life without worrying about online abuse.

One takeaway from the dialogue was the importance of awareness and education. Many people still do not grasp the full impact of digital violence during elections and how profoundly it affects women's confidence and civic participation. Promoting digital literacy, responsible online engagement, and accountability can help create safer spaces for women to lead and share their voices.

Another inspiring part of the event was the unity and determination in the room. Seeing young people, advocates, and leaders come together to protect women’s voices was incredibly powerful. It was a reminder that real change happens when we all stand together: when we call out injustice and push for better systems that protect rather than silence.
As we move forward, we believe it is up to all of us to make the digital space a place of growth, not harm. Technology should uplift women, not intimidate them. By standing up against online violence and continuing to raise awareness, we can build a future where every woman feels safe to speak, lead, and be heard both online and offline.
