This year marked a defining moment on the global stage, the G20 Summit coming to Africa for the very first time. It was not just history unfolding; it was Africa claiming its place in conversations that shape global priorities. Her Initiative had the privilege of being present in South Africa during this important moment, represented by our Executive Director, who joined a series of engagements that brought together leaders, innovators, and thinkers committed to advancing the continent.

Being in those rooms was a reminder that Africa’s future is not a distant idea it is being built now, and organizations like ours are part of that movement, shaping what inclusion and opportunity look like for young women.

Ahead of the G20 Summit — A Conversation Rooted in Reality

One of the most powerful moments came during President Cyril Ramaphosa’s opening remarks:

“Global cooperation cannot ignore global inequality.”

The honesty in that statement sat deeply with everyone in the room. It raised an uncomfortable but necessary question: what does progress even mean if millions still lack access to opportunity?

The emphasis on technology as a catalyst for economic transformation brought us back to the work we do every day, ensuring young women are not left behind as digital economies expand. Inclusion is not a slogan for us; it is the foundation of how we design programs, build partnerships, and mobilize communities.

At the TIME Africa Impact Summit — Africa's Voice, Africa's Vision

Another major gathering that took place alongside these events was the TIME Africa Impact Summit, a room filled with some of the most influential thinkers shaping the continent’s future in technology, investment, and innovation. The panel featured voices such as:

  • Mike Mpanya, Founder and Chair of Nubi Group and 2050 AI
  • Keletsositse Olebile, CEO of Botswana Investment & Trade Centre
  • Fatima Tambajang, Head of Startups and VC at Nvidia
  • Siseko Mahlati, Managing Director at Quantum-h Africa
  • Emmanuel Lubanzadio, Head of Africa at OpenAI

Their conversations centered on Africa’s place in the global economy, how technology, AI, and data can drive growth if the continent is equipped, resourced, and trusted to lead.

The theme “From imagination to implementation” echoed throughout the summit. It captured the exact spirit of the moment: Africa is not waiting to be invited into the future; it is building the future in real time.

Being present in a space where leaders spoke boldly about innovation, talent, and investment reaffirmed what we believe at Her Initiative young women must be included in this vision, not as beneficiaries, but as active architects.

Global Citizen NOW: Johannesburg — When Commitment Turns Into Action

The momentum continued at Global Citizen NOW, where world leaders and change-makers gathered with one goal: turn ideas into meaningful outcomes. And this time, commitments were not theoretical, they were historic.

Leaders pledged €15.5 billion to scale renewable energy across Africa. This commitment is set to:

  • Power 17.5 million homes
  • Deliver 26.8 gigawatts of clean energy by 2030

A monumental step forward for the “Scaling Up Renewables in Africa” campaign and a powerful demonstration of what is possible when public and private partners unite.

Throughout the day, participants tackled issues that directly shape the lives of the communities we serve: global health, climate resilience, economic equality, and sustainable development. Each conversation connected back to one truth: Africa's progress depends on inclusive, people-centered solutions.

Her Initiative’s presence in these rooms mattered. It meant young women whose ideas, businesses, ambitions, and needs were represented in conversations that often overlook them. It meant we were able to witness commitments that will shape the environment young African entrepreneurs will inherit. And it meant we could return home not only inspired, but informed and ready to integrate global insights into local action.

Why This Matters for Her Initiative — And for Africa’s Girls

Attending these global conversations reinforced what we already know:

Africa is rich with talent, creativity, and resilience. What it needs is investment, access, and systems that believe in its people, especially its young women.

For Her Initiative, these moments strengthened our conviction. We are not simply running programs; we are preparing young women to step into the very future being imagined on these global stages. When girls innovate, when they build businesses, when they access digital tools and financial opportunities the continent moves forward.

These events were not an endpoint. They were a reminder that:

  • Our work belongs in global conversations.
  • Local action is as powerful as high-level policy.
  • Young women must be part of Africa’s economic transformation not later, but now.

We left South Africa inspired, challenged, and deeply committed to ensuring that the future being shaped for the continent includes the girls and young women we serve. Because this inclusion, innovation, shared power is what a truly invested, sustainable future for Africa looks like.
