In April, we received over 170 applications from youth leaders across Dar es Salaam and Iringa. Following a thorough review process, 70 candidates were shortlisted and interviewed, leading to the selection of the final 44 participants who advanced to the Training of Trainers in Dar es Salaam. These selected youth leaders from both Dar es Salaam and Iringa demonstrated strong potential and commitment to driving impact within their communities.

This was more than just recruitment. It set up the people who will drive the project on the ground.

In Going Beyond, impact is not delivered directly. It is multiplied. Each youth leader will go on to train and support dozens of young entrepreneurs in their communities. Many of these entrepreneurs are already running small businesses, often without access to capital, markets, or structured support.

This is what makes scale possible.

But selecting youth leaders is only the first step. For them to actually deliver, the system around them has to work.

This is what the work in Iringa focused on.

Engagements with the Regional Commissioner’s Office helped position the program within the local system. This means youth leaders are not working in isolation. They are recognized, supported, and better connected to existing structures.

This reduces confusion and makes it easier for them to carry out their work.

At the same time, engagements with host organizations helped bring clarity to how the work will be done. Roles were clearly defined, expectations were aligned, and ways of working were agreed on.

This matters. Because when roles are unclear, things slow down. When they are clear, work moves. These steps have strengthened the environment around the youth leaders. They are not just selected, they are now better supported to deliver.

Because in this model, success does not depend on one person or one activity. It depends on how well everything connects.

And that connection is what makes impact possible at scale.
