More Than a Training: Preparing Young Leaders to Create Change

For ten days, a room filled with 44 young people became a space for learning, growth, and possibility.

Selected from a pool of more than 170 applicants, these youth leaders arrived with different experiences and aspirations, but a shared desire to create opportunities for others. By the end of the Training of Trainers (ToT), they had gained more than knowledge; they had strengthened the confidence, skills, and mindset needed to lead change within their communities.

The Going Beyond ToT brought together youth leaders from Dar es Salaam and Iringa as part of their preparation to facilitate digital business learning sessions for young people in their communities. Throughout the training, participants explored topics ranging from digital business and facilitation techniques to safeguarding, communication, and leadership development.

The significance of the moment was also reflected in the presence of key stakeholders who joined participants throughout the training. Among them was the Kinondoni NGO Registrar, representing the government and reaffirming the important role that young people play in community development.

Addressing participants during the training, the Registrar encouraged the youth leaders to view themselves as active contributors to social and economic transformation.

"Communities need young people who are willing to step forward, create solutions, and support others to grow. The knowledge and skills you gain here should not end with you; they should create opportunities for many more young people in your communities."

The training also provided an opportunity for Her Initiative's leadership to reflect on the broader vision behind the Going Beyond Project. Speaking to participants, the Executive Director Lydia Charles Moyo reminded them that leadership is not defined by titles, but by action.

"You were not selected simply because you applied. You were selected because we saw potential in you to become changemakers. The real success of this training will not be measured by what happens in this room, but by the lives you touch once you return to your communities."

Yet some of the most memorable moments happened beyond the training content itself.

Between presentations, group discussions, energizers, talent-sharing sessions, and moments of laughter, participants built connections that transformed a group of strangers into a supportive network of young changemakers. As confidence grew, participants who were initially hesitant to speak in front of a room began facilitating discussions, sharing ideas, and leading conversations with conviction.

For many participants, the experience changed how they viewed themselves and their ability to lead.

One youth leader reflected on the journey by saying:

"When I arrived, I was nervous about standing in front of people and facilitating sessions. Through the training, I discovered that leadership is something you develop through practice and commitment. I now feel ready to go back and support other young people in my community."

Another participant highlighted the value of learning alongside peers from different backgrounds.

"What inspired me most was being surrounded by young people who are passionate about creating change. The training gave me knowledge, but it also gave me a network of people who share the same vision for their communities."

What stood out most was not only what participants learned, but what they began to believe about themselves.

The training reinforced a powerful message: young people are not only beneficiaries of development initiatives, they are leaders capable of creating opportunities, influencing change, and inspiring others to act.

As the 44 youth leaders prepare to return to their communities, they carry with them new skills, stronger networks, and a renewed sense of purpose. Soon, they will begin facilitating digital business learning sessions, helping other young people access knowledge and opportunities that can strengthen their economic futures.

The true impact of these ten days will not be measured by the sessions delivered or certificates awarded. It will be reflected in the communities reached, the young people empowered, and the opportunities created long after the training has ended.

The Going Beyond Project is implemented by Her Initiative in partnership with Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT) and the Mastercard Foundation. As this new cohort of youth leaders takes the next step in their journey, we look forward to witnessing the ripple effects they will create in communities across Tanzania.
