Recently in Tanzania, a movement is underway. It's a movement fueled by passion, dedication, and the belief that young voices hold the power to transform communities. This is the kickoff of the second phase of STAWI Lab – a sign of a new beginning for youth-led organizations that are dedicated to championing the rights and interests of girls and women.

STAWI Lab, which translates to Flourish Lab, is not just a project; it's a bold ecosystem-building initiative with a singular goal: to empower the next generation of change-makers. Led by Her Initiative in partnership with TWAA, STAWI Lab is a testament to the unwavering commitment to addressing local challenges with customized local solutions.

At its core, STAWI Lab embodies the spirit of collaboration, mentorship, and empowerment. It's more than just providing resources; it's about nurturing talent, promoting innovation, and cultivating sustainable change. From capacity-building to mentorship to seed grants, STAWI Lab offers a holistic approach to support youth-led organizations on their journey towards impact and influence.

The journey begins with a vision of a future where young people are not just participants but partners in the quest for progress. It's a future where resources are not just allocated but invested in the hands of those who dare to dream, innovate, and lead. This vision is articulated in the words of our Founder and Executive Director Ms. Lydia Charles Moyo, a young woman leader who dared to challenge the status quo in her open letter to development partners: "Put Your Money Where Your Words ARE!!"

STAWI Lab is a response to that call for action. It's a platform for young leaders like Lydia to turn their vision into reality, amplify their voices, and catalyze change in their communities. Through targeted training, consultative mentorship, and flexible grants, STAWI Lab equips youth-led organizations with the tools, resources, and support they need to flourish and thrive.

The impact of STAWI Lab has been tangible. In the first phase conducted in 2021, it took only three months for 18 youth-led organizations across six regions in Tanzania to undergo transformative training and mentorship. From strengthening financial systems to mobilizing resources to enhancing brand visibility, these organizations made significant strides toward their goals.

Suzanne Yumbe, the first winner of STAWI Lab phase one from AfyaPlus, reflects on the transformative journey ignited by the program, "STAWI Lab didn't just transform our organization; it ignited a wildfire of change within us. With their guidance and support, we overhauled our systems, fortified our strategies, and dared to dream bigger than ever before."

She continues, "And the impact? It speaks volumes. Thanks to STAWI Lab, we not only secured a substantial grant from the Malala Fund but also positioned ourselves as leaders in the fight for women's rights and healthcare access."

Now, as the second phase has begun, 20 organizations from selected regions have been chosen to participate. This phase is marked by the same dedication to capacity building, resource allocation, and advancement of the rights and interests of women and girls.

Sophia Nshushi, Executive Director of Teens Corridor Organization, a beneficiary of this year’s STAWI Lab, shared her enthusiasm; "We are thrilled and honored to have this opportunity to further our mission of advancing the rights and interests of girls and women in Tanzania."

Lydia Charles Moyo, the Executive Director of Her Initiative, emphasized the objectives of the second phase: "As we embark on the next phase of STAWI Lab, the objectives are clear: to strengthen the capacity of 20 youth-led organizations, to resource these organizations with flexible grants, and to advance the rights and interests of women and girls. It's a journey that will require dedication, collaboration, and unwavering commitment – but it's a journey worth taking."

Looking ahead, we are also planning to establish an investment fund that will benefit not only the current 20 organizations in phase two but also extend support to the 18 organizations from phase one. This fund aims to provide sustainable financial backing, ensuring these youth-led initiatives can continue their impactful work beyond the initial stages of STAWI Lab.

So, as we raise our voices and lift our spirits, let us remember the words of Lydia and the countless young leaders who dare to dream of a brighter future. Let us put our money where our words are, and let us invest in the power of youth to shape a world where all voices are heard, all dreams are realized, and all rights are respected.

This is the kickoff of STAWI Lab phase two and the beginning of a new era of empowerment, inclusion, and change. Together, let us flourish, let us thrive, and let us create a world where every girl and every woman has the opportunity to shine.
