How Her Initiative is Empowering Tanzanian Girls Through Technology and Financial Literacy
In a bold step towards transforming education for girls in Tanzania, Her Initiative has donated ten laptops to five secondary schools participating in the Mshiko Clubs Project. This donation, aimed at enhancing learning efficiency and access to educational resources, so as to make a lasting impact on the lives of Tanzanian girls, helping them stay in school and succeed academically.
Empowering Girls with Financial Literacy and Technology
The Mshiko Clubs Project has become a cornerstone for girls’ education in Tanzania, combining essential financial literacy, rights education, leadership training, and entrepreneurship. Through these clubs, girls are empowered with the tools they need to secure their futures, not just by relying on employment but by creating their own economic opportunities.
Her Initiative’s donation of laptops is a crucial part of this effort, providing girls with the technology they need to access learning materials, conduct research, and improve their academic performance. This initiative is designed not only to foster a deeper understanding of financial management and entrepreneurship but also to enhance their digital literacy. These new tools will help them stay ahead in an increasingly digital world.

The Power of Mshiko Clubs
Launched to address the challenges faced by girls in accessing quality education and resources, Mshiko Clubs focus on providing girls with financial education and entrepreneurship training. The program is designed to build confidence and leadership, with a focus on teaching skills that will help them make informed decisions and manage their finances effectively.
The girls in the Mshiko Clubs learn how to budget, save, and manage their money wisely. They are also equipped with skills to identify business opportunities, fostering self-reliance and leadership. The addition of technology skills further boosts their ability to access educational resources, thereby improving both their academic performance and personal development.
Supporting Tanzanian Girls' Education: A Personal Journey
The story behind Her Initiative’s mission is deeply personal to its founder, Lydia Charles Moyo. Eighteen years ago, Lydia was a student at King’ongo Secondary School, where she witnessed firsthand how inadequate learning conditions affected many girls’ chances of succeeding academically. Out of the 199 students in her class, only nine advanced to higher education. This experience inspired her to establish Her Initiative and the Mshiko Clubs, aiming to break the barriers that prevent girls from achieving their academic and personal potential.
Today, Lydia’s vision has come full circle. Returning to King’ongo Secondary School with the Mshiko Clubs Project, Her Initiative is making a real difference, bringing financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and technology skills to students in five schools: King’ongo, Saranga, Malamba Mawili, Kiluvya, and Dar es Salaam Girls Secondary Schools.
Reaching More Girls, Creating More Opportunities
The impact of the Mshiko Clubs Project is already evident. Through the program, girls are learning how to manage their finances, build businesses, and become confident leaders. The new laptops are a crucial tool that enables students to further their education, conduct research, and learn digital skills, which are increasingly important in today’s job market.
The initiative’s ambitious goal is to reach over 2,500 girls across 25 ward secondary schools by 2029. By providing access to learning resources, financial education, and entrepreneurial skills, Her Initiative is ensuring that girls have the support they need to stay in school, perform better academically, and make sound life decisions.

What Stakeholders Are Saying
Lydia Charles Moyo, Founder and Executive Director of Her Initiative, shared her excitement about returning to King’ongo: “Returning to King’ongo 18 years later to empower girls is a special moment for me. It is an opportunity to ensure that girls overcome the barriers caused by poverty and can use creativity, technology, and digital skills to improve their academic performance and achieve their dreams.”
The Ubungo District Education Officer also praised Her Initiative's efforts, stating: "We commend Her Initiative for recognizing the importance of investing in financial education for our girls. Through Mshiko Clubs, students are learning how to manage their resources, make informed decisions, and secure a brighter future. This is not just a benefit for the girls but for the entire community."
A King’ongo Secondary School student shared her experience, saying, "Through our projects, we are learning to manage money, be innovative, and solve challenges. This initiative helps us understand how to use resources wisely, collaborate, and improve our academic performance."
Another student from Saranga Secondary School expressed her gratitude for the new laptops: “Before receiving these devices, we struggled to access learning materials. Now, with laptops, we can study more easily, conduct research, and improve our digital skills, which will help us in school and beyond.”

A Bright Future for Tanzanian Girls
The Mshiko Clubs Project is more than just a program—it’s a movement to empower Tanzanian girls with the skills and resources they need to thrive. By combining financial literacy, entrepreneurship training, and digital skills, the project is providing girls with the tools to build better futures for themselves and their communities.
Her Initiative's impact is clear: with access to education, technology, and mentorship, these girls are not just learning to be better students; they are becoming future leaders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers.
As Her Initiative continues to expand its reach, it is helping to reshape the educational landscape in Tanzania, ensuring that every girl has the opportunity to succeed and realize her full potential.
