A Seed Becomes a Garden: The Birth of Femi Hair Growth Products
Before joining the Going Beyond Project, Felista Millinga’s life looked very different from the thriving businesswoman she is today. She was a young woman with a dream but without the tools to pursue it. With only Tsh 20,000 in her pocket, limited business knowledge, and no digital skills, Felista struggled to find customers, grow her small idea, or even believe that her vision was worth pursuing. Every day felt like a battle between hope and doubt. She knew she wanted more for herself and her family, but like many young women across Tanzania, she lacked the opportunities, mentorship, and information that could help turn her potential into progress. Her story raises an important question: how many young women remain stuck not because they lack ability, but because they lack access?
When Felista joined the Digital Business sessions under the Going Beyond Project Phase 1, everything began to shift. The training did more than teach her how to market online — it rebuilt her confidence, introduced her to digital tools, and opened her mind to a world she previously thought was out of reach. Surrounded by peers who were also learning to create, innovate, and grow, she realized she, too, had something valuable to offer. With support from the program, Felista developed her brand, Femi Hair Growth Products, starting with a single hair oil tested on her own hair. The encouragement and knowledge she gained empowered her to expand her product line, build trust with customers, and refine her digital presence.
Today, the contrast between her past and present could not be clearer. The young woman who once doubted her path now earns over Tsh 1,000,000 per month, employs seven young people, operates agents in four regions, and runs her own salon in Dar es Salaam. She has won a business award for her outstanding use of social media, supports her family independently, and continues to mentor other youth by sharing her journey. The challenges that once limited her have now become the foundation of a powerful, inspiring story of resilience and transformation.
