In the world of social impact, few moments compare to the experience of having your champions step into your space not just to observe, but to celebrate, reflect, and dream with you. That is exactly what happened in May when the Her Initiative team had the profound honor of hosting the King Baudouin Foundation (KBF Africa) at our offices in Dar es Salaam.

As the laureate of the 2024 KBF Africa Prize winner, this was more than a scheduled visit, it felt more like a homecoming of sorts. A day that turned the spotlight not only on the milestones we have achieved together, but on the relationships, trust, and shared values that have made it all possible.

A Moment of Meaning of the visit

From the moment the KBF team walked through our doors, the atmosphere shifted. There was laughter in the air, curiosity in every question, and a deep sense of camaraderie that filled our hearts. It was not just about office tours or presentations, it was about storytelling. Every corner of our space became a narrative of bold ideas turned into action, of young women defying odds, of partnerships rooted in purpose.

We sat in a circle. We listened to one another, broke bread together, and shared achievements and aspirations we have for the future. These were not just project updates; they were human stories of resilience, leadership, and hope. And in those conversations, we were reminded of something powerful: that we are not walking this path alone.

The Power of Being Seen and Believed In

In her reflection, our Executive Director Lydia Charles Moyo shared what this visit meant from the heart of a young woman leader:

“As a young woman leader, this visit from King Baudouin Foundation reminded us that winning the KBF Africa Prize in 2024 was not just a dream for us, it was a representation of trust in African youth and young women. It is also an intentional investment in women and girls’ rights.”

Indeed, being acknowledged by a global foundation does not just affirm the work we do, it affirms why we do it. This visit reminded us that real impact is not transactional. It’s relational. It’s rooted in belief in seeing young people, especially young women, not as risks, but as repositories of innovation, courage, and the future we all want to build.

A Season of Movement and Momentum

The KBF visit came at a time of incredible momentum for Her initiative. May has been a month of powerful transitions from international fellowships, to grassroots digital business training, to workshops addressing gender-based violence. Our work has spanned borders and sectors, driven always by one clear mission: to create spaces where young women thrive socially and economically.

And yet, none of this would be possible without partners who walk with us. Who not only funds projects but invests in people. Who challenge the status quo with us and stand beside us when the road is tough. KBF has been that partner.

A Message to the World: Invest in Youth, Invest in the Future

To our fellow youth and young women changemakers: keep unboxing the barriers around you. Each challenge is an invitation to lead. Each "no" you encounter is a call to innovate.

To funders and investors reading this: young people are not a risky investment. They are the source of Africa’s solutions. The heartbeat of community transformation. The architects of a world that is equitable, inclusive, and brave.

A great testament and compliment to the KBF team for investing and trusting in the hopes and dreams of young champions who want to lead change in their communities. There was something deeply affirming about being seen not just for what we do, but for why we do it. The KBF team reminded us that behind every milestone is a foundation of trust, belief, and shared purpose. Their visit reinforced that we are not alone on this journey. We are part of something bigger, a collective movement to create a world where young women thrive.

Let it be known: when partners walk through our doors, they do not just witness impact. They become part of it.
