In a pivotal moment for youth leadership and gender equality in Tanzania, representatives and committee members of young women leaders from various youth young women-led and youth young women-serving organizations gathered in Dodoma for a strategic dialogue with the representatives from the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women, and Special Groups. The organizations represented included Her Initiative, ICCAO Tanzania, Sheria Kiganjani, Macho kwa jamii and Young and Alive Initiative, all playing a key role in advancing the Young Women Leaders Agenda.

This high-level meeting comes in the wake of a significant milestone: the appointment of Lydia Charles Moyo, Executive Director of Her Initiative, by the Minister of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elders and Children. Hon. Dr. Dorothy Gwajima, to lead the Young Women Leaders Agenda. Lydia’s selection marks a bold step forward in institutionalizing youth voices, particularly those of young women, in national leadership and policy-making processes.

The convening in Dodoma was more than just a meeting, it was a moment of alignment. Through inclusive dialogue and innovative approaches, participants co-created a shared vision for a strategic partnership between the government and young women-led organizations. The discussions centered on increasing meaningful participation of young women in decision-making spaces, addressing structural barriers, and building a sustainable framework that ensures young women are not only present but heard and empowered in the leadership of the nation.

This collaboration signals a shift: the future of leadership in Tanzania must be co-designed with young people, especially young women, at the center. With Her Initiative now steering this national agenda, and with the support of both civil society and government, there is renewed hope that inclusive leadership is not only possible, it is inevitable.

As this agenda unfolds, it will continue to draw strength from collective action, trust-building, and accountability between state and non-state actors. What began as a conversation in Dodoma is now laying the groundwork for a generational movement, one where young women lead, influence, and transform Tanzania’s leadership landscape.

At the core of it all, this is about more than just the women in the room it is about the countless young women they represent. Women who lead in the face of challenges, push through barriers, and continue to show up for their communities every day. Their voices carry the weight of shared struggles, and their presence in that space is a reminder that real change begins when those most affected are the ones leading the way. As we move toward the Young Women Leaders Summit, there is a renewed sense of purpose.
